Reinvention
by Rose Marsh
I would like my heart to explode.
I like to drink as much caffeine as possible,
and feel it thud against my chest,
like a frightened little bird.
I want it to burst out in a flash of red.
Then I will be still and quiet.
Sometimes I want to peel open my ribs
to see what I look like on the inside.
Pink and wet, disgusting --
with a distinct taste of copper.
Let me reinvent myself.
Let me become beautiful inside.
I want the night sky to coat the lining
of my body cavity
and holy words and honey
to course through the planets that
will make up who I am.
No more lungs or heart.
And I'll be magnificent.
I'll shine. I'll be a universe within a soul.
Breathtaking and impossible.
